History
of Indian Jewelry Making

| In India,
jewellery forms a very important part of the personal
adornment. At first, shells, pebbles, seeds, and other
natural objects were used to make jewellery. After the
development of metal work however, gold and silver grew
to be treasured and used for all manners of adornment.
Jewellery in India varies
from region to region. Kundan is a well-known in India
and very expensive style of stone setting. South Indian
jewellery is inspired by nature. In Kashmir, parts of
Bengal, and Cuttack in Orissa, filigree silver is the
speciality. Thick ivory bangles are most famous in
Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Now a days, Imitation
Jewellery or Artificial Jewelry is the choice of the
mass. Gold Jewellery is being substituted by Artificial
Kundan and Indian Fashion Jewellery. These Fashion
Jewelries are light, lustrous and cheap which has been

Some techniques of
jewellery making
Kundan
The hollows in which the stones are to
be encrusted are filled with pure gold. Uncut stones,
including diamonds are then studded and set.
Enamelling
The process of enamelling entails
fixing or fusing differently coloured vitreous glazes
onto the metal surface. As each glaze fuses at a
different temperature, the skill of the enameller lies
in fusing these glazes in the right order.
Filigree
Among the important centres of
filigree are Cuttack in Orissa, and Karim Nagar in
Andhra Pradesh. With twisted silver wire being the base
material, filigreed ornaments have a lacy, trellis-like
appearance. Silver wire is drawn, then presses into a
variety of shapes and patterns. Smaller articles are
directly moulded into various designs, while in the case
of larger ornaments, components are made and then pieced
